Travel… It’s Electrifying!
Everything You Need To Know About The UK ETA System
If you are planning to travel to the UK you best get acquainted with the electronic travel authorisation system (aka the ETA) that kicked in to play back in November 2023. The scheme has been slowly transitioning since. This type of digital system already applies to certain foreign nationals and is similar to the U.S system requiring an ESTA for travel purposes. Confused.com about what you need to do to comply? Relax, that is what this Lawtee is here for, sip back, relax and discover everything you need to know about the new ETA system.
What Is The UK’s Eta System?
The UK’s ETA system essentially obligates certain foreign nationals to apply for digital permission to travel to the UK. This type of scheme already operates in America, Australia, New Zealand and Canada and helps the Home Office to regulate entry in and out of the UK. Since 15th November it has been mandatory for Qatari nationals to have an ETA and since February 24th it has been mandatory for nationals of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Jordan to have one. The scheme is being slowly rolled out to the rest of the remaining countries. If you are from Australia, Canada and New Zealand you will have to apply for an ETA from January 08th 2025. Nationals of EU and EEA countries (Ireland excepted) will need to apply for one from 2nd April 2025 and the early birds can start from 5th March 2025.
What Happens If You Travel Without An ETA?
While to be compliant all Non — EU nationals should have an ETA before arriving in the UK or or after 8th January, and EU and Swiss nationals (except Irish) should have an ETA on or after 2nd April 2025 — there is talk of a ‘grace’ period where you may still be able to board the plane. You will have to apply for an ETA while boarding in this case and still travel to the UK. It is not advised to rely on this as the grace period is up in the air (do pardon the pun) for peace of mind, it is best to apply in good time before you travel. Need a hand? How Do You Apply For An ETA?
Good question, to apply for an ETA you can do so on your phone. You must download the app and follow the instructions which involve scanning your passport and taking a picture of your face. You answer a few simple questions and ta-da you should be approved. If you have any problems with the application — contact an immigration law firm near you. There is a small fee with your application of £10 per person.
What Happens If An ETA Application Is Refused?
In certain cases your visa may be refused for example if you have a criminal conviction, you will need to apply for a visitor visa. This process can take a little longer and be more complex so it may be worth speaking to an immigration law firm near you.
